Ok, so before I start this review I have to let you guys know that this series (and author) are near and dear to my heart. Now, you may think that will color my review but I can assure you that if this latest installment wasn’t as amazing as I was hoping it would be, I just wouldn’t way anything about it. But, that was SO not the case. Hawkyn was everything I knew it would be and a bag of chips. Yup, it was that good.
Here’s the thing about Larissa Ione’s writing, her world building, her characters, her storylines are second to none. With this newest release I was brought right back into why I fell in love with this series all those years ago. Hawkyn is a delicious alpha male with a heart of gold and a sense of duty that had me swooning like a love-sick teenager. Aurora is a gal I would love to hang out with and has a strong personality with a wit about her I loved. She’s thrown into this new world and reacts EXACTLY like we all would, asking the kind of questions we would (like, “can I see your wings?”) and her inner monologue had me chuckling out loud.
I was SO pulling for these two to somehow beat the incredible odds stacked against them from the very beginning. I won’t ruin anything for you but if you know Larissa’s writing, you know there’s always a way 😉
I also have to say that I was thrilled to get more of Azagoth! Although now I’m a nervous wreck for him and Lilliana. Yep, I just totally left you with a cliffhanger there…
Reading this novella was like coming home and it totally gave me the urge to re read the entire series, which I’ll be starting as soon as I finish typing this!
Whether you’re already a fan of Ms. Ione or this is your first taste, I know you’ll love Hawkyn as much as I did!

Hawkyn A Demonica Underworld Novella edition by Larissa Ione Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

4.5 stars

I think I am getting a little addicted to these Demonica Underworld stories! Ms. Ione is fantastic at detailed, complex world-building, and she does a wonderful job humanizing the supernatural beings who populate that world to make them relatable.

For centuries Hawkyn has focused on being the best at his job so that he can Ascend and garner a spot on the Memitim council in order to make some changes in the lives of his brothers and sisters. Memitim babies are abandoned to cruel conditions in the human world in order to turn them into cold ruthless enforcers of the will of the angels, and that is point number one that he wants to focus on. But first he has to find a way to keep the Primori assigned to him alive despite being a despicable example of humanity in order to succeed atg yet another assignment.

When Hawkyn accidentally interferes with the killer's abduction of a beautiful woman, he is worried that he altered the Fate timeline of his charge. At the same time, his conscience wars with his sense of duty as he wonders how someone so cruel can possibly be important and influential to the course of human history. Point #2 he wants to change the disclosure of pertinent info like that to the Memitim protectors. When he sees an opportunity to take Aurora to safety, he seizes it and whisks her away to the Underworld hospital while he tries to figure out his next move.

This story is filled with both family and personal conflict as Hawk struggles with the path he is on and the requirement for blind obedience to a higher authority. Azagoth, his father, is undergoing similar emotional upheaval, and when the Grim Reaper gets upset, bad things are in store! Through it all, Hawk and Aurora are trying to find their footing too. The revelations about Hawk's world and duties are a bit if a shock to her, and despite the fact he us protecting her, she knows if he is required to sacrifice her to ensure his Primori fulfills his destiny he won't hesitate to do it... or will he? They seem to have a certain connection, and Hawkyn finds himself questioning the Big Picture more and more often. A particularly cruel punishment inflicted on him by the angels for his recent actions seals the deal for him and he throws caution to the wind.

The fallout of that decision is unexpected at best but I love the way the author brought everything to a resolution. Hawkyn is one of my favorite stories that I have read in the DU world so far!
“Clearing her throat, she snapped her eyes back up to his face, but his amused expression said he knew she’d been ogling his angelic junk.”

Hawkyn
Loc. 1333 of 2915

Yes, you read that right — angelic junk. Hawkyn, fallen angel, a Memitim, is packing, and wytch, Aurora Mercer (we’ll get to the wytch part a little further on down), has taken notice.

Delicious Aurora and hunky-hottie Hawkyn’s first meeting is marked by a horrific circumstance. While checking up on his Primori, serial slasher/murderer Jason Drayger, Hawkyn bears witness to Aurora’s abduction by Jason — she’s his next victim. Thinking Hawkyn is a party to her kidnapping, Aurora uses her wytch powers and disables him instead of Jason. Big mistake. Jason is the sort of sicko that makes Dexter pale by comparison.

Hawkyn doesn’t immediately seek out Aurora’s rescue, even though he’s aware of Jason’s predilection to slice-and-dice his victims. Besides being fried by Aurora’s misguided blast of energy, Hawkyn is Jason’s guardian angel—and as warped as this may sound, it is his assignment to keep Jason, his Primori, safe.

Jason, apparently, is going to be responsible for a special event that will impact all creatures—human, divine, paranormal, and as such, Hawkyn hesitates to intercede on Aurora’s behalf. It is strictly forbidden for a Memitim to interfere with the fate of his Primori; Memitim who violate that edict never ascend to Heaven. Ouch.

Hawkyn finds himself in his own personal hell (which is not as odd as that sounds, as his father is Azagoth, aka The Grim Reaper). Hawkyn can’t deny his pull to Aurora and his deep need to save her, even if it means he loses his own chance to rise in the Heavens.

After some consultation with the family, Hawkyn rescues Aurora from Jason. She’s been injured and Hawkyn takes her to the most interesting hospital in all of paranormal/supernatural fiction, the Underworld General Hospital (think the cantina scene from the original Star Wars).

As Aurora recovers, Hawkyn learns that she descends from a lineage of wytches created when succubi mated with humans (yes!). No magic spells or potions for her—she has inbred powers. Plus, having succubi DNA means this girl is as horny as, well, h*ll. Unfortunately, Hawkyn, with his angelic Memitim junk is celibate. (Larissa Ione is one tough taskmaster regarding her characters.) As Hawkyn has already broken the one cardinal rule of the Memitim and it’s been hundreds of years since he’s had, um, any, who can blame him if he wants to give into the wytchy woman who owns his heart? No judgment here, Hawkyn.

Larissa Ione’s Hawkyn is the newest offering in her terrific Demonica Underworld series, as well as the latest in the 1001 Dark Nights line-up. For those of us who love Larissa Ione’s universe of fascinating paranormal/supernatural characters, Hawkyn is a rather tasty tidbit, to be sure.

Cleverly written, Hawkyn is ripe with the creative characters that are the hallmark of author Ione. Additionally, this novella is chock full of Easter eggs—ranging from a discussion about the true supernatural nature of Keanu Reeves to a raging debate regarding Star Trek v Star Wars.

Hawkyn is not a stand-alone story. While author Ione even provides a glossary of terms for newbie navigation, this longtime Demonica devotee struggled with the sheer amount of characters and tangential plot lines crammed in this novella (there’s even a glimpse of Lexi Blake’s McKay-Taggart upcoming crossover tossed in the mix). By mid-point in the story, I found myself more engrossed in the continuing, but focused arc of Azagoth/Lilliana rather than Hawkyn/Aurora’s storyline, which, in retrospect, is exactly the clever and crafty intent of the author.

Well-written, as always, fascinating and entertaining, Larissa Ione’s Hawkyn satisfies the craving, but leaves the reader hungering for more.

Three and one-half stars.
