My daughter had to read a Dear America book for her 4th grade summer reading. She chose this one. Mind you, she's a good reader; however, this book required a lot of my interaction as some of it was written in a "cockney" accent, which was very difficult for my daughter to understand/read. The vocabulary is also very advanced, which is great, but it didn't seem to be that of a "13-year old" (which is the perspective of the book.) Also, it is sad because (spoiler alert), many of the people we meet in the book end up dying from the shipwreck. It's a great way to expose kids to real history, but it definitely brings up some hard topics and extensive vocabulary. As a parent, be prepared to have involvement with your child as they read this book.

I used this book in conjunction with my Titanic unit. It is interesting to the students because the girl is an orphan. They love learning all of the "English" words such as bobby for police, mummy for mom, etc. It is also a great example of vivid writing -- which I am trying to teach my students. Another note, many of the vocabulary words that we are learning appear in the book.
this book really surprize me on how much i loved it.i read it in one sitting.i could not put it down.i felt really close to margaret a young woman who just lost her mother.i just lost mine one year ago.she having to find a way to make living ,get to her beloved brother.dealing with the harass class system of early 20 century.being treated as a equal one minute then servant next .not losing who she really is.making brave choices that showed what a kind brave smart woman in the end she was.i going to give this book to my neiceshowing her character is important part of being a woman.
This is a blast. Bought it as a gift for my 10 years old. She like it so much. Saying this is the one that every girl in her class want to read.

Perfect for the high reader in 4th or 5th grade. I am enjoying these books myself and I am the teacher! Students who learn best by experiencing things will remember the vivid details of these historical events because the books put you right in the story. They are told in journal form usually written by a young teen during the time period. All facts are backed up by resources found at the back of the book. My students are hooked!
Margaret is an orphan. Her parents died a long time ago and her brother is in America, saving up for her to move there. An opportunity presents itself when a rich American woman wants a companion to America. Margaret jumps at the chance and is on her way onto the Titanic. She makes friends, writes letters, and enjoys the high life until the inevitable happens. This is a really good story but a sad one. It'll keep you reading until the end.
Even at the ripe old age of 75, I love these books. I have read them and given them away for years. Now I have an 11 year old great grand daughter who also loves them. I buy, read and send on to her.
