At first glance Goddess Fire may seem a complex mythic fantasy, but at its core is the basic human condition: a struggle for survival. Twenty years previous, a great plague strikes the land of Egira, killing off most of the men and leaving the land without leadership. Rescuers come in the form of the Vleth, 7' tall women with strange powers, mind readers who convince the Egirans and the Sylvani race who founded the great Egiran cities that they are there for the good of all. In short order, they enslave the men, create an army from the lowest class of Egiran women, whom they call Dames, and train them to be fighters. The Dames in turn strip the Sylvani of their basic rights and force them to yield to the Vleth's supreme power. The Sylvani are ordered to build catacombs beneath the city in which they are entombed. Unable to feel the light of day, sickness comes and weakens what little strength they have, and yet they are determined to survive.
Ten days prior to the anniversary of the Vleth takeover of Egira, the leader of a small dissenter group learns that the Vleth plan something big for Aeyri Day, a celebration of Vleth supremacy, named after their goddess Aeyri. In celebration of their takeover of Egira, they decide to annihilate the Sylvani. Ten days is all the resistance has to save the Sylvani population and destroying the Vleth, the Dames and the madness that has gained control over their land.
Goddess Fire, to fiction what Avatar is to film, is a spectacular epic adventure. Author Meg Westley has created a sweeping tale in the temperate city of Crescena in the grip of a noble war. Her characters are vibrant women of extraordinary fortitude. While the focus of the story centres around fighting the Vleth, the blend of setting, description and language sets Goddess Fire among the best fantasy novels of this generation. Hollywood would be wise to take note of this incredibly story of honour, strength, and determination.

Goddess Fire Meg Westley 9781935361077 Books Reviews
Goddess Fire is a superbly spellbinding tale with exceptionally brave and vividly terrifying characters that immediately captivate the reader in this suspenseful struggle of endurance under an evil supremacy.
Resistance to The New Order brews in tunnels underground where the persecuted Sylvani quietly formulate their strategy to rise against dark forces and regain their freedom. These artisans, who brought their highly civilized culture to Egira centuries ago, are running out of time when they learn the Vleth preparations are underway to eradicate their entire race in a ceremony of fire. Now their unbending desire for freedom has become an urgent battle for survival!
Once welcomed by the people of Egira to cure a devastating plague, the Vleth arrived from a distant realm to establish their reign of terror by delegating police authority to a sadistic army of Dames and manipulating women gifted in sorcery, healing and spiritual insights to do their bidding. The incredibly tall, indigo skinned creatures with sharp talons have an insatiable lust for domination and despise the Sylvani race entirely.
Inspired by ancient whispers of Leil, god of dreams, courage rises for this seemingly hopeless undertaking to dethrone the Vleth by using their own magical powers against them. Assistance for the cause is found unexpectedly within the hierarchy but would the cruel worshipers of Aeyri, goddess of nightmares, be equally as clever in discovering the plot to obstruct their path to ultimate sovereignty?
This riveting adventure has many exciting twists and the characters are so brilliantly crafted they spring to life in the mind's eye. Definitely worthy of a sequel, Meg Westley's debut novel is a must read!
Nys lives in a city ruled by Vleth, who look like blue black women with talons instead of fingernails. Her father and her people are held prisoner in tunnels under the city. She learns they are to be massacred in just a handful of days. She is part of a resistance movement which had been plotting to free them somehow - but the resistance was in dire straits even before discovering this sudden time limit. What can they hope to do now?
They seek to use the magic of the Vleth against them, to infiltrate them and spy out their secrets. Although the Vleth rule, they are not complacent, and seek to spy on the resistance as well. Two can play at the game of spies and infiltration, and Nys finds that death stalks the resistance as well, the handful of people she trusts still not imprisoned in the tunnels. The Vleth have deep and deadly secrets - but can the resistance use those secrets, or will the secrets use them instead?
Alternating with the present action, we learn how this situation came about. At first the Vleth were welcomed as saviors, because they came to cure a plague that killed most of the men of the city. Then they helped refill the power vacuum created by the death of those men. Little by little they created their own private police force, the Dames, who know they owe their position to the Vleth. Meanwhile it became more and more dangerous to speak up for the Sylvani, who were gradually persecuted for more implausible crimes as people grew used to keeping silent. Men lost all their rights and became property in much the same way.
These are not your parent's hobbits. While most of the sex is not too explicit, it can be violent and intense. Sex is woven into this fantasy, as are violence and domination. The Vleth and their servants seek to dominate those they lust after, emotionally and psychologically, physically and violently, even painfully. All the Vleth are female, and men are near the bottom of the hierarchy they have created - except for the despised Sylvani, a minority of artists and architects who thrived in the city before the Vleth came.
