With Justice for Hope, Susan Stoker has another winner on her hands. We first met Hope and Billy in Justice for Milena. Billy was the little boy that was kidnapped by the villain in that story. Hope and Billy have gotten off the streets, barely, when Calder Stonewall finally finds them. Life has taught Hope that nothing lasts and that trust can hurt. Fortunately, Calder has an abundance of patience. His interactions with Billy are nothing short of swoon-worthy, especially since the boy no longer speaks (as a result of the aforementioned kidnapping). When an unexpected event completely upends Hope’s life, Calder is there to love, support, and defend her. Calder is an unlikely hero – a 40 year old medical examiner who is, by his own admission, nerdy, and awkward around women to whom he’s attracted. But that is part of his appeal. And when Calder loves, it is with his whole heart. That’s evident by his deep friendships with the other heroes of this series, in his relationship with Billy, his opening his home to Joseph, and his steadfast support of Hope. While Hope is on the run from an abusive ex, it is Billy who is put into danger. The big question is - from whom? And that answer … well, read the book and find out.Tags : Justice For Hope (Badge of Honor: Texas Heroes Book 12) - Kindle edition by Susan Stoker. JUSTICE FOR HOPE (Badge of Honor Texas Heroes Book 12)by Susan Stoker10 stars!
Hiding from her ex is exhausting enough, but for Hope Drayden, putting her seven-year-old son through a life on the run and living on the streets has been mentally torturous. When a kind diner owner offers her a job, Hope begins to claw her way toward a new beginning for herself and Billy, one tip at a time.
Calder Stonewall has been looking for Hope and Billy for weeks. When they unexpectedly show up at the scene of a crime, his interest soon becomes personal. He’s amazed by the beautiful, brave woman and her resilient son. He’s also surprised by his growing need to take care of them both, although winning Hope’s trust won’t be easy. But when a tragedy thrusts the couple together, Calder quickly proves he’s a man Hope can rely on.
I am always amazed by the way Susan Stoker intertwines her stories with different characters from different books. She gives her heroes a life of their own, and her heroines become ideals of how women can and should be strong to be the perfect partner for their men.
I am one huge fan!
If I could give 0 stars I would. I have read the Badge of Honor series’s and was looking forward to Calder’s story. But they just get dumber by the book. So, Calder is in his 40s, smart, well educated, etc. and has never been attracted to anyone but suddenly is obsessed with this homeless woman and her son. This book could have been good the character of Calder had so much potential, but he comes off almost creepy the way he instantly falls for this woman and her son. He has not even met them when he decides he wants them to be his. SPOILER********
The heroine is TSTL when she wins a million dollars in the lottery then hands the ticket off to Calder , whom she barely knows. This from a woman who just left an abusive marriage and she puts such trust in a man she barely met. Honestly? She deserved to have him steal it for being that dumb. So she gets all this money and still can’t invest in a PI or bodyguard to deal with threats against her. She has a son who has been through significant trauma and doesn’t speak, but Calder doesn’t even suggest therapy for the kid. Or sending him to a school, as he was certainly preschool aged. Maybe Texas doesn’t have preschool? Most of the book is about the kid not talking from the prior trauma, but none of these people suggest therapy or speech therapy.Calder and his cop friends, who apparently don’t actually ever have to be at work, investigate. None of the cops or their firefighter friends ever have any work to do, and are always available to hang out or look for a missing homeless woman. Calder is an ME who also has an EMT certificate and been through police academy? Really?
Also, not only do the cop friends not have jobs and can be at Calder’s beck and call, it neither do the firefighters. The FFs have such cringeworthy names as “ Driftwood” “ Taco” and “ Crash” “Moose” and “ Squirrel.” Those are the most unimaginative nicknames, and most FFs would not be ok being called Driftwood. The dialog in he book was also painful and not indicative of how real people speak, and very repetitive.
Also, these books are creepy how all the women just love each other and they all hang out together like some freaky cult. How many people are friends with all the wives of their friends and all the wives are BBFs together? Just creepy and not realistic. I have had this problem with ,any of her books, but I kept with them, hoping Calder’s story would be better, but it only got dumber.
I have been waiting for Penelope’s story and with the buildup Stoker has given it has rich potential to be amazing. But if stoker did this to Calder, how much will she mess up Penelope?
JUSTICE FOR HOPE by Susan Stoker. This tale tells the story of Hope, Calder and Billy. Hope and Billy, mother and son, haven't had an easy go of it as of late and Calder, being the alpha male he is, does all he can to swoop in and save the day. Yet, Hope is independent and strong willed. It was enjoyable to see these two navigate their relationship and to watch Hope give in to her feelings, despite her fear. And to watch Calder recognize that he has met the One! The first half of the book moves along at a leisurely pace and we get to know each character and where their heart and mind is at. There isn't much happening except for the journey of the love story and then BAM! Ms. Stoker certainly knows how to throw a curveball to any relationship. This story has a little bit of everything - a touch of humor, sweet love, the beauty of youth and even a surprise or two along the way. Oh, and did I mention a little bit of suspense and mystery too. As seems par for the course, Ms. Stoker even made me tear up - her ability to put down in words the heartfelt emotions her characters feel simply touches my heart. I highly recommend reading JUSTICE FOR HOPE. Yes, this is book 12 of the series, but can easily be read as a standalone, although many characters from the previous books make appearances. On that note, I also encourage you to read the other stories in this series as well.
